Bhubaneswar: The district administration has begun culling of chickens in Paradip after confirming an outbreak of avian influenza in the district here on Sunday.
The district Collector of Jagatsinghpur and ARD Department of the State Government had formed six teams. They are positioned for the last 3-4 days and the culling operation has started that is only limited to 1 km vicinity of the Paradip area and the surveillance will be positioned up to 10 km.
Principal secretary of F & ARD Department of Odisha, Vishal Gagan said, “There will be a continuous surveillance by the teams constituted by the district administration. Hardly around 2000 poultry birds had been identified in that area and the culling will be done within 3 days.”
“After that for about three months no birds will be allowed to rear in that area. That’s the follow up nature that happens. The area will be in complete surveillance”, he added.
Reportedly, 10 Rapid Response Teams have been made in order to identify the affected area and kill the birds. The team had started their surveillance from Badapadia and Sandakuda, two major areas in Paradip. On day one, about 170 eggs and 40 chicken had been killed and buried in deep pits at the outskirts of the town.
They are providing adequate compensations to the farm owners in exchange of the killing. The poultry farms have been asked not sell and transport their items for a temporary period of at least three months.
Restrictions are imposed on transport or selling of birds from these areas to outside, according to the officials.
