Koraput: Semiliguda police rescued 21 child labourers from Damanjodi Chhak in Koraput district late on Friday night. Police have arrested three middlemen in this connection.
According to reports, 21 children including 17 minor girls who were being trafficked to neighbouring Andhra Pradesh to work as labourers for harvesting paddy were rescued from Damanjodi Chhak late on Friday night. Three middlemen had roped in these children from Damanjodi, Kakrigumma and Narayanpatna areas of the district to work as child labourers in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh for harvesting paddy.
These children along with the middlemen were waiting for the bus at Damanjodi Chhak to take them to Andhra Pradesh when acting on a tip-off police raided the place which led to their rescue and arrest of the three middlemen.
The middlemen had promised to pay them a daily wage of Rs 500, the children said.
Police have handed over the rescued children to the Child Welfare Committee.
