Malkangiri: A 21-year-old nursing student allegedly died by suicide in MV-13 village under Malkangiri police station limits on Thursday morning, leaving her family in shock.

The deceased, Ankita Biswas, daughter of Brundaban Biswas, was a final-year student at a private nursing college in the same village.

According to her father, Ankita had been in contact with a youth named Sujay from MV-60, who allegedly promised to marry her. Two days ago, after an argument, Ankita consumed pills in front of others and was admitted to Malkangiri district headquarters hospital, where she recovered and was discharged on Wednesday night.

Her father said that Ankita had told him on Wednesday evening that Sujay would take her to his home the next day, and the family agreed. However, on Thursday morning, before they could leave, Ankita hanged herself at their residence. She was rushed to Malkangiri district headquarters hospital, but doctors declared her dead.

In an emotional statement to the media, Brundaban Biswas alleged that his daughter was deceived and demanded strict punishment for Sujay, even calling for the death penalty. He claimed that he had warned Sujay and others about Ankita’s fragile mental state, but his concerns were ignored.

Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the circumstances leading to the incident.
