Malkangiri: In a major crackdown on wildlife smuggling, forest department officials on Monday rescued 210 live Indian flap shell turtles that were allegedly being transported illegally in Malkangiri district.
According to official sources, the seizure was made during a search operation conducted inside a forest near MV-62 village. Acting on specific inputs, forest personnel intercepted a sport utility vehicle (SUV) and discovered the turtles packed inside 10 gunny bags.
However, upon spotting the approaching forest staff, the driver and other co-accused persons abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene. Despite efforts, they could not be apprehended till late evening.
The forest department seized the vehicle along with the gunny bags containing the turtles. A wildlife offence case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act, and an investigation is underway. Authorities are making efforts to identify and trace those involved in the illegal trade.
The rescued turtles are being taken into safe custody for further necessary action as per legal procedures.
Reports suggest that the turtles were being transported from Andhra Pradesh to MV-62 village in Malkangiri district. The estimated market value of the seized turtles is around Rs 4 lakh.
Officials reiterated their commitment to curbing wildlife trafficking and warned that strict action would be taken against those found involved in such illegal activities.
