Cuttack: Mangalabag police have arrested three anti-socials accused of extortion in Cuttack city.
The arrested have been identified as Raja alias Rajesh Pal and Vicky alias Bhabani Shankar Rout of Malisahi, Ranihaat and Bapi alias Srikant Behera of Gopal Sahi, Ranihaat, police said.
“Acting on a tip-off that some anti-socials were regularly threatening people and extorting good amount of money from them, a team from Mangalabag police station raided a place in Bajrakabati Road area yesterday late in the evening and arrested three of them while some others managed to escape from the spot,” informed S K Sarifuddin, ACP Zone-II, Cuttack.
Briefing on the criminal antecedents of those arrested, Sarifuddin said that the arrested persons have serious criminal cases against them which include extortion, preparing to commit dacoity, attempt to murder, etc.
They have nine criminal cases pending against them at Mangalabad police station and other police stations as well, he added.
Police said that the accused persons who were forwarded to court today were later sent to jail as their bail pleas were rejected by the court.
Sarifuddin informed that the Commissionerate Police will be intensifying its drive against extortionists and anti-social elements to make the ensuing festive season peaceful for the citizens.
Worth mentioning, the Commissionerate Police on Friday had announced the launching of an ‘anti-extortion task force’ to be headed by Additional Police Commissioner Lekha Lohani.
