Berhampur: In a tragic incident, three persons were killed and more than 12 sustained various degrees of injuries when a speeding SUV rammed into a marriage gathering waiting on a road outside the venue in Mandiapalli village in the suburb of Berhampur in Odisha on Tuesday night.
The deceased are all women and were identified as Swala Reddy (32), Sanju Reddy (23) and Bharti Reddy (12). They are all residents of the Lanzipally Keshav Nagar area of Berhampur.
All the injured have been admitted to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital here. The condition of two injured – cameraman Rabinarayan Das, who was recording the video of the marriage, and one Rajesh Reddy, is said to be critical. They have been shifted to a medical facility in Visakhapatnam.
According to reports, the accident occurred when more than 50 female members of a marriage party were standing on the side of a road near the marriage venue after the wedding, waiting to participate in the marriage procession to begin. While some people were engaged in decorating both sides of the road for the event, a speeding SUV suddenly appeared from nowhere and ran over them. As a result, three people died on the spot.
The driver of the vehicle tried to escape after the accident but lost control of the wheels and crashed against the porch of the house. He along with another person sitting in the vehicle was nabbed by the villagers and handed over to the police.
