3 Women Killed, 4 Others Injured In Lightning Strike In Karanjia

Karanjia (Mayurbhanj): In a tragic incident, three women including a pregnant woman were killed and four others including a child were critically injured in a lightning strike in Ward No. 15 of Karanjia NAC in Mayurbhanj district today afternoon.

The deceased have been identified as Subasini Das (70), Jibati Naik (30) and Hemlata Ho (25).

According to reports, a woman Mukta Munda of Ward No.15 died in the morning today.

Upon getting the news of Mukta’s death, several of her relatives from the nearby villages had come to attend her last rites.

While her relatives were sitting under a mango tree, suddenly a thunderstorm started and a bolt of lightning struck the tree.

Out of the people sitting under the mango tree, Subasini, Jibati and Hemlata (the pregnant woman) died in the lightning strike.

Malati Naik, Bhuban Ho, Sonali Baskey and Tejeswari Naik (child) were critically injured in the lightning strike.

Local police on reaching the spot seized the bodies for conduct of post-mortem and rushed the injured to the Sub Divisional Hospital (SDH) here.

Local MLA and Minister Basanti Hembram who was at her Ankura residence rushed to the spot. And on reaching the spot she arranged for rushing the injured to the hospital.

She was present in the hospital facilitating the treatment of the injured.
