**Rayagada:** At least 34 Odia labourers working at a food factory in Kerala have alleged that they have been confined by their contractor and appealed for their release.
Reportedly on November 7, the labourers working at a Biscuit factory at Alappuzha district in Kerala had a scuffle with some local youths after they denied to pay ‘chanda’ for Diwali.
Later in the evening, the youths entered the camp where the labourers were staying and attacked them in presence of their contractor.
It was after one of them managed to call the police, the labourers were rescued from clutches of the youths.
The labourers also alleged that the contractor has instigated the youths to attack them after they demanded their wages.
However, now the labourers are forced to survive in a single room with little food and water since the contractor has locked them in it stating their lives are in danger.
After receiving complaints from their family members, Rayagada SP Rahul P R contacted his Alappuzha counterpart following which 10 labourers have been rescued and provided shelter at a local police station.
Further, District Labour Officer of Rayagada, PK Bhoi, informed the district administration is in contact with authorities in Kerala and a team will be formed to rescue the labourers.
