Sundergarh: Four people have been arrested for allegedly killing an elderly man on suspicion of practicing sorcery in Kandakhal village under Sanpatrapali Panchayat in Sundergarh district on Tuesday.
The deceased has been identified as Mahadev Pradhan.
According to police, the accused from the same village attacked Pradhan late on Tuesday night, beating him to death on the spot over alleged witchcraft claims.
Locals informed the police immediately after the incident. A team rushed to the village and began an investigation. The police said that the accused were produced in court today.
“Initial inquiry suggests the killing was triggered by suspicion of sorcery. Further investigation is underway. The victim’s wife was also injured and is receiving treatment at the hospital; she is currently stable. Following the incident, a case was registered at Sadar Police Station. The forensic team visited the spot and collected evidence, and the body was sent for post-mortem at Sanpatrapali PHC. Four people have been arrested in connection with the incident,” said Sundergarh SDPO Nirmal Kumar Mohapatra.
