4 Maoists Killed In Exchange Of Fire In Odisha’s Kandhamal

Phulbani: Four Maoists were killed in an exchange of fire between the extremists and the security forces at about 6 AM on Sunday in Sirla reserve forest area under Tumudibandha Police Station in Kandhamal district.

A joint team of SOG and DVF jawans was combing when they were fired upon by the ultras. In return fire, four Maoists were gunned down. The deceased include three male and one female whose identities are yet to be revealed, confirmed DIGP (Southern Range) Satyabrata Bhoi.

Bhoi added that a huge cache of weapons was seized and a combing operation is still going on.

On Saturday, after getting reliable information about the presence of an armed group of Maoist in the area, the joint team had launched a search operation and during combing saw a large group of Maoists camping in the jungle area. The team tried to approach them but the Maoists suddenly started firing.

Police party gave their identity and asked the Maoists to surrender but they paid no heed. They were continuously firing from sophisticated automatic weapons and also lobbing grenades. Due to this some police personnel also got injured.

It was when the police party fired in self-defense, the Maoists fired for some more time and finally escaped taking cover of dense jungle.

When the firing stopped and the police party searched the area and found dead bodies of 4 armed Maoists of BGN division including 2 male cadre and 02 female cadres. Their identity is being verified. The police party also recovered six sophisticated weapons from the search along with IED.

It is expected that there were around 35-40 armed Maoists in the jungle who were having sophisticated weapons and heavy explosives. Combing operation has been intensified in the area and search is on for other Maoists.

The official Twitter account of Chief Secretary of Odisha congratulated the officers and the jawans of Odisha Police on the successful operation. The tweet added, “This strengthens our resolve to free our state from extremism and spur all-round development in the state.”

DGP Abhay also asked the Maoists to surrender and join the mainstream assuring that the State Government has a very generous surrender and rehabilitation policy for them.
