Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police Bhubaneswar-Cuttack today arrested four persons, who are showroom owners, for selling counterfeit LED TVs of reputed brand-Sony, besides seizing 120 such units of different sizes here today.
The accused persons have been identified as T Pravakar Rao, proprietor of Khusi Electronics, Netaji Market, Laxmisagar; Siba Prasad Sahu, proprietor of Sai Electronics, Tankapani Road, Badagada; Manas Jena, proprietor of Ganapati Electronics, Kargil Basti, Airport area; and Shamim Khan, proprietor Unitech Electronics, IDCO Colony, Mancheswar, the police said in a statement.
According to the police, the mastermind of the counterfeit syndicate T Pravakar Rao used to procure counterfeit Sony TV from Kolkata and sell it to prospective buyers through his associates (the other accused persons) in the local markets.
Revealing on the modus operandi of the racket, police said, the accused persons mostly targeted lower income group people who cannot afford to buy branded TVs which are costly. They used to convince prospective buyers by telling them that these units have been procured through Paradip Port and are mostly imported from a foreign country and as they are not paying the customs duty, excise and GST they are selling it at 50% less the original amount.
In the event of any fault developing in the units, they either replaced the defective unit with a new TV or refunded the money to the buyer, police said.
Four cases have been registered one each at Laxmisagar, Badagada, Airfield and Mancheswar police stations, police stated.
All the accused persons have been forwarded to court, police added.
