40 Fishermen Arrested For Unlawful Fishing In Odisha’s Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary

Kendrapada: As many as 40 fishermen were arrested by the forest department officials for unlawful fishing at Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary, according to reports. They have seized around ten boats from the fishermen.

It may be recalled that over 112 fisherman were arrested from from Gahirmatha on January 29 for unlawful fishing.

Notably, in view of the annual mass nesting season of endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles, the officials start sea patrolling within the marine sanctuary from November to May every year. However, there is prohibition on sea fishing in force round the year within the marine sanctuary limits.
