Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police has nabbed five members of a gang of chain snatchers from the city.
Police have recovered 24 gold chains weighing 198 gms valued at around Rs 10 lakh, two R15 bikes, one Pulsar 22o bike and six mobile phones from their possession, said an official press note.
The accused have been identified as Laxman Sahu alias Nikhil (23), Sushil Kumar Rana alias Silu (19) both from Godi village under Khordha Sadar police limits, Pradip Sahu (19) of Sastri Nagar under Kharvelanagar police limits, Bubul Samantaray (25) of Behera Sahi under Nayapalli police limits and Gopinath Das alias Bapi (39)of village Balapur Pathuriasahi under Satyabadi police limits who was the receiver of stolen goods.
According to the press note, in the past few months, several incidents of gold chain snatching took place inside the city in which two bike-borne culprits looted chain from commuters during the daytime.
To curb the activities of this gang, a special team consisting of Special Squad, OCPO, the POPD team and Team 60 was formed to nab the gang.
The team upon analysis of the cases and sequence of events could know the gang was the same that was using one R15 bike.
Accordingly, the special team during its operation on Tuesday while the culprits were on the move they were apprehended near Kalpana Chowk.
The modus operandi of the culprits was to snatch gold chains from women commuting inside the city. The culprits used stolen speed bikes like R15 affixed with fake registration number plates to avoid being caught by the police.
Police have stated that the gang consisted of six veteran criminals and it is involved in 20 cases of which 17 are of Bhubaneswar and the remaining 3 are of Puri.
During the investigation, the special team could know that the culprits were using one R15 bike which was stolen from Acharya Vihar and this gave the lead towards identification of the culprits.
On Tuesday, the special team could know that the culprits were on the move inside the city with the same bike and the team got alerted and finally apprehended them from Kalpana Chowk while they were fleeing on seeing the police.
