50-Year-Old Woman Dhaba Owner Shot Dead For Refusing To Serve Food During Night Curfew

Nuapada: A 50-year-old woman dhaba owner was shot dead by a miscreant on Saturday night for refusing to serve food on her premises.

The shocking crime unfolded near Duajhara village under Khariar police limits. The deceased, Basanti Meher had been running a dhaba over the past several years, in the locality, till Saturday night, when she was killed.

According to reports, two motorcycle-borne youths showed up at Meher’s dhaba late night on Saturday and demanded to be served dinner. Citing the COVID-19 lockdown restrictions (night curfew), she turned down their demand.

Infuriated by Meher’s refusal, one of them pulled out a gun and fired at her. The 50-year-old sustained a bullet injury on her chest and collapsed on the spot. Within seconds, the miscreant duo fled from the spot on Sinapali route, reports added.

The eatery staff rushed their employer to Khariar sub-division hospital where she was declared dead.

Meher’s killing sent shockwaves in the town. The deceased family have demanded arrests and justice in the case. Khariar police have registered a murder case and launched a manhunt for the woman’s killers.
