Bhubaneswar: As many as 5,632 schools have been closed and merged in the State in the last five years, informed School & Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond in the Odisha Assembly on Friday.
Minister Gond shared this information in a written reply to a query by Congress MLA from Barabati-Cuttack Sofia Firdous.

The Minister revealed that no school has been reopened since June 2024.
Responding to Firdous’ further query on what steps is the government taking to reopen and improve schools in constituencies with the highest closures, Minister Gond has stated that if there are specific grievances to re-open the closed/merged schools, then as per the provisions under clause 24 of this Department Memorandum No. 5538/SME dtd. 11.03.2020, the same shall be examined by District Grievance Redressal Committee and the report shall be forwarded to State Grievance Redressal Committee for consideration. On the recommendation of State Grievance Redressal Committee, steps will be taken for re-opening of the closed school, he added.
