Bhubaneswar: Sahadevkhunta police in Balasore district have arrested a 57-year-old woman over alleged peddling of brown sugar.
Police have seized brown sugar weighing 110 gm, having an estimated market value of Rs 11 lakh and Rs 2,400 from the possession of the accused woman.
According to a press release issued by the Balasore District Police Headquarters, Sahadevkhunta police on Wednesday received intelligence input that one female aged about 57 years from Masjid Lane, Arad Bazaar was selling brown sugar to customers in the same area and was negotiating with them for disposal of the contraband.
Accordingly, police conducted a raid leading to the seizure of 110 gm of brown sugar from her exclusive and conscious possession, the release said.
Besides, the accused woman has two similar cases registered against her in Sahadevkhunta and Basta police stations, the release added.
The release further said that a joint excise raid was conducted by Balasore police along with the Excise and Forest Departments in the Puruna Balasore area over the last two days leading to the seizure of 1,200 ltrs. of Illicitly Distilled (ID) liquor and 15 quintals of firewood were seized & 3,0000 ltrs. of pocho (fermented stuff used for distilling liquor) was destroyed at the spot.
As many as a total of 20 nos. of different enforcement-related cases have been registered in the last two days.
Further, 7 nos. of Excise cases have been registered in Nilgiri Sub Division and 435 ltrs of ID liquor have been seized.
