Sundergarh: It seems there is no stopping of child branding cases in Odisha with the latest report coming from the tribal belt of Sundergarh district. A 6-month-old baby was branded with hot iron on his stomack by a local healer (quack) in a bid to cure him from fever.

This incident occurred in Rengalibada village of Sankhaposh panchayat, Lakhunipada block.

Notably, the half-year-old son of Buddha Munda was suffering from fever. The body temperature did not drop inspite of several attempts. The family members took the baby to a local quack who branded him with a hot iron.

The condition of the baby deteriorated and became critical instead of healing. He was rushed to Lakhunipada Community Health Centre.

According to the sources, the infant is undergoing treatment and her condition is stable now.

Child branding is still being practiced as the healing procedure for the ailing children. The tribals believe that the local quacks have the power to cure the babies from all the ailments, and sometimes even lose their children in the process. Despite numerous health awareness campaigns, reports of such child branding surfaces again and again in the tribal belt which should be a matter of grave concern to the authorities.
