Baripada: The Special POCSO Court here today awarded a 60-year-old man to undergo 20 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) for raping a minor girl in 2021.
The court awarded the sentence to Jagmohan Nayak of Snakuchha village under Jharpokharia police limits of Mayurbhanj district after convicting him of raping a minor girl on March 20 in 2021.
The court has also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on Nayak. The court has ruled that Nayak shall have to undergo RI for another six months upon failure to pay the fine.
The court further ordered the District Services Authority of Mayurbhanj to pay Rs 4 lakh as assistance to the rape survivor.
According to proceedings of the case, on 20 March 2021, the parents of the minor girl had gone to work as daily wagers leaving the victim and her brother at home. Taking advantage of the situation, Nayak raped the minor girl.
After family members of the victim came to know about the incident they lodged a written complaint at the Jharpokharia police station. Following the complaint police registered a case and launched an investigation into the matter.
After recording the statement of the victim police arrested Nayak and forwarded him to court.
The Special POCSO Court after examining the statements of 13 witnesses, and medical and police reports convicted Nayak of rape and sentenced him to undergo 20 years RI.
