Baripada: In a significant verdict, the District Additional Sessions Court in Mayurbhanj on Friday sentenced a 62-year-old man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) for repeatedly raping a differently-abled tribal woman in 2021.
The court also imposed a fine of ₹50,000 on the convict. In case of default, the convict will have to serve an additional six months in jail, the judgment stated.
According to case details, the 22-year-old survivor was sexually assaulted multiple times in 2021, which eventually led to her pregnancy. The matter came to light when the survivor’s family lodged an FIR at the Rasgovindpur police station.
The conviction was secured on the basis of the survivor’s testimony, depositions of nine witnesses, and corroborating medical evidence.
The court’s verdict has been seen as a step forward in ensuring justice for vulnerable women, particularly those belonging to marginalized communities.
