Bhubaneswar: As many as 698 elephants, 48 leopards, and 07 tigers have died in the last eight and half years (from 2015-16 to 25.9.203) in the State, informed Forest, Environment and Climate Change Minister Pradip Kumar Amat in the Odisha Assembly today.
Replying to a query from Bhandaripokhari MLA Prafulla Samal, Amat said that the deaths of the aforementioned wild animals were due to different diseases, electrocution, train accidents, road accidents, poaching, poisoning, etc.
He said to prevent unnatural deaths of elephants and tigers several measures securing their habitats, planting edible trees, developing pastures for the growth of herbivorous animals, creating artificial waterbodies, preventing forest fires, anti-poaching camps, deploying special squads, forest patrolling, use of technology to keep a watch on the movement of elephants and poachers, public awareness, etc. have been taken up.
