Balasore: A total of seven students of Soro’s Purubai Kanyashram have tested positive for Japanese encephalitis.

“Out of the 48 samples sent for testing, 7 have tested positive for Japanese encephalitis,” informed Dr Dulalsen Jagdev, Chief District Medical & Public Health Officer (CDM&PHO), Balasore.

Dr Jagdev said that the situation is better now and there is nothing to be scared of. He informed that as of now a total of 32 students have been affected.

He said that out of these 32 students, 13 are admitted to the Community Health Centre (CHC) at Soro and 17 were shifted to the district headquarters hospital (DHH) here.

He further informed that while two of the afflicted students were discharged yesterday, the condition of two other who were serious and were having signs and symptoms like headache, convulsions and vomiting has improved and they are doing better now.

“The condition of the two students who are in the ICU at the DHH here was very serious and now they are doing well due to the hard work of our doctors and ICU staff,” said Dr Jagdev.

Dr Jagdev informed that he had visited Purubai Kanyashram on Tuesday and a RBSK (Rastriya Bal Surakshya Karyakram) has been stationed there.

“I personally visited the Kanyashram yesterday. We have stationed a RBSK team there. The team is examining each and every child. Any child found to be suffering from cough and cold is being shifted to CHC Soro. Their blood samples are being drawn at the CHC to test for viral encephalitis,” the CDM&PHO said.

He informed that mobile RBSK teams are being sent to each and every ashram school to check the health condition of students if anyone is having cough or cold.

In case of doubt the team sends the children to the nearest CHC, he added.
