Bhubaneswar: The Nandankanan Zoological Park (NZP) on Sunday recorded the birth of seven yellow anacondas, marking a significant milestone in its reptile conservation programme.
According to reports, the hatchlings were born to a pair of anacondas brought from the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust in Chennai, on October 22, 2019. This marks the second successful breeding event at the zoo. The previous instance occurred in July 2022, when one hatchling was born on July 6, followed by eight more on July 8.
With the latest births, the zoo now houses a total of 14 yellow anacondas—comprising two adult males, two adult females, and ten juveniles. Another female is expected to deliver soon, further contributing to the growing population of the species at the facility.
Yellow anacondas (Eunectes notaeus), though non-venomous, are among the largest snake species in the world and are native to South America. The successful breeding of these snakes in captivity is considered a noteworthy achievement in herpetological circles.
