Bhubaneswar: After committing a series of robberies in the city, a unit of the notorious Eragola gang was nabbed by the Commissionerate of Police on Tuesday. All of them are natives of Tippa Colony in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh. They belong to the Eragola tribe whose members are notorious for theft and robberies across the country.
The accused were identified as Petla Naveen (22), Gugula Raja (53), Akula Dantel (28), P Deva (40), Kunchalu Chinna (28), Baig Ibrajim (37), Banala Poulu (39), and Gogula Salman (33).
Their modus operandi is to break open scooter and motorcycle dicky or windshields of four-wheelers to make away with valuables. In the recent past, four such cases were reported in different police stations in the city, following which the Special Squad was pressed into service to trace the culprits.
While two cases were registered in Jatni, there was one such incident in Kharvel Nagar and Chandrasekharpur areas. On Tuesday night, a joint team of the Special Squad and Sahid Nagar police raided a rented house and apprehended eight members of the gang.
The accused use traditional method of recceing people coming to banks and leaving with cash. On getting an opportunity, they would flee with the cash and valuables, the police said. They have been booked and forwarded to the court.
