Sambalpur: The Hirakud dam authorities continued to release flood water from the reservoir for the second day on Monday to control the rising water levels owing to heavy rain in the upper catchment area.

Currently, the water level in the reservoir stands at 614.49 feet and the dam has been releasing 1,17,126 cusecs of water into the Mahanadi river to manage an inflow of 93,061 cusecs of water.

By 6.00 am on Monday, 1,16,982 cubic feet of water entered the dam, while the same amount of flood water is being discharged through five sluice gates and various canals.

The flood water is being released through two floodgates on the right spillway of the dam and six on the left.

In addition, the authorities have opened 34 crest gates.

The authorities have issued a high alert for the districts along the bank of the Mahanadi River, especially the low-lying areas which may experience flood due to the release of water from the dam.
