Bhubaneswar: A total of 9,495 rapes were registered in Odisha in the last three years, informed Minister of State (MoS) for Home Tusharkanti Behera in the State Assembly today.
In a written reply to a query from BJP lawmaker Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia, Behera said that in the last three years 4,243 cases of murder, 38,329 cases of theft and 1692 cases of dacoity were registered in the State in the last three years.
Behera informed that while there have been 17 deaths in police custody, 14 notorious criminals were apprehended following an exchange of fire during encounters with the police in the last three years.
He told in the reply that police had to resort to firing on 59 occasions to avoid various unpleasant situations in the last three years.
Out of the aforementioned cases of firing by the police, 57 cases were against Naxal activities and in two cases police had to fire twice, he added.
The MoS said that in meetings and rallies held by political parties in the state in the last three years, indiscipline was reported on 52 occasions.
The state government has created 36 new police stations keeping in view the law and order situation, population, crime statistics, and demand of the public representatives, he said adding that the number of police stations in the State has gone up to 679.
