Cuttack: Cyclone FANI damaged 14 lakh trees and eight lakh saplings in the coastal State of Odisha. The Forest and Environment Department was the worst-affected in the cyclone as it sustained loss of Rs 537 crore. Braving all odds, the Department has tightened its belt to bring back the lost green cover.

In Cuttack, the Department has set up a booth in Tulasipur's Madhukunj Park where citizens can take five saplings for free on showing their Aadhaar cards. Ajay Raj, who is managing the booth said, “We have started this initiative to regain the lost cover. There are over 25 different types of saplings including medicinal, neem, cashew, peepal, etc. We have already given away 1200-1300 trees.”

One Om Prakash Panda, member of Students for Development NGO said, “This booth is spreading awareness about the damage caused to trees by the Cyclone. Many people did not know about the number of tress uprooted in Puri. Now, they know and want to do their bit.”

“With an application from our seniors, I have been able to take 80 saplings from here. Our NGO, which consists of student volunteers and youths, will go around Cuttack city and conduct a plantation drive soon,” he beamed in excitement.
