Sitharaman Donnes Sambalpuri Saree During RS Session, Reveals Her Love For Odisha Handloom

Bhubaneswar: While Odisha is a rich State in terms of culture, traditions and heritage, the art, artisans, weavers and crafts-person of this place have a unique identity worldwide.

Among the most acclaimed weaving styles of Odisha, the 'Sambalpuri' pattern has placed this State on a separate pedestal in Handlooms.

World-renowned personalities have taken pride in filling their closets with garments made by weavers of Sambalpur. Noted among them was former Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi who was a connoisseur of Sambalpuri sarees.

The future generations are no different, Samabalpuri patterns continue rule hearts of women. A testimony to the fact was Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman donning a Sambalpuri saree during the ongoing Parliament session today.

Sambalpuri sarees are woven using a weft and warp technique which has gained massive popularity. The saree that Sitharaman was wearing today was royal blue and maroon in colour with the hand-woven indigenous designs embedded.

The occasion was - General Discussion on Union Budget 2019-20 in the Rajya Sabha. Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan tweeted a picture of Sitharaman and appreciated her Sambalpuri attire.

The Finance Minister acknowledged Pradhan's tweet and said that her saree collection comprises Sambalpuri and Bomkai. "Orissa-handloom sarees are one of my favourites- the colour, the weave, the texture, just so good," Sitharaman added in the tweet.
