Bhubaneswar: As we gathered on Republic Day, Dr. Sujit, Dr. Chitralekha, Dr. Anuradha, and I embarked on a journey to meet an extraordinary individual — Nurshingha Dev Sahoo, a man whose bravery and courage surpass the ordinary. In his mid-20s, he is no stranger to selfless acts.
Our destination was his modest rented residence, tucked away in a corner at Satashankha in Bhubaneswar – Puri Road.
This young graduate, residing with his aging parents, leads a life filled with humility. By day, he imparts knowledge to young minds in a primary school, and in his spare time, he joins his parents in their modest Dahibada Aloodum business on the roadside.
The day unfolded with anticipation as we visited him after a hospital function. For me, it was a momentous occasion, as I was about to meet the person who played a pivotal role in a life-altering event.
Nurshingha’s heroism unfolded on the morning of November 19, 2023. While getting a haircut at a local salon around 6:45 am, he heard a loud commotion and rushed outside to find an accident site about 350 meters away. I was the victim, struck by a moving lorry while cycling home, catapulted into the air, and eventually landing in a roadside depression, with a broken cycle thrown nearby.
Witnessing the scene, Nurshingha observed my unconscious and bleeding state, with my skull exposed due to the loss of scalp tissues. The onlookers hesitated to help, fearing legal consequences, but Nurshingha gathered the courage to step in without losing further time.
First, he assessed my condition and attempted to secure an ambulance, but none were available nearby. Without wasting precious time, he made the courageous decision to transport me to a nearby healthcare center on his motorcycle. Collecting my valuables and securing them at his home, he used a towel as a makeshift sling, tying my unconscious and bleeding body to his back with the help of onlookers.
Despite his fear and uncertainties, Nurshingha, using my phone, contacted my family and then drove over 6 kilometers to reach the Sakhigopal Primary Health Centre. There, a doctor provided crucial first aid, sutured my wounds, and stemmed the bleeding. Meanwhile, Sujit and Anu arrived there and arranged for an ambulance to transfer me to Utkal Hospital in Bhubaneswar for further treatment.
Throughout this harrowing experience, Nurshingha remained by my side, ensuring my well-being until I left for Bhubaneswar. His presence of mind and swift actions not only prevented further harm but also saved my life.
His grit determination and resilience are exemplary and commendable.
To this extraordinary young man, a true good Samaritan, I am forever indebted. He is my hero, my saviour —Nurshingha Dev Sahoo.
With deep gratitude, I extend a big salute and a heartfelt hug.
