Abandoned Elephant Calf Rescued In Athmallik, Shifted To Kapilash Zoo

Dhenkanal: A female elephant calf, barely one to two months old, was rescued after being trapped in a canal and abandoned by its herd in the Athmallik Forest Division earlier this month.

The calf, saved by the forest staff of the Athmallik Range on September 11, has now been shifted to the Kapilash Zoo Rescue Centre for specialized care and monitoring.

According to forest officials, immediate efforts were made to reunite the calf with its herd, but they proved unsuccessful. Following this, the Rapid Response Team (RRT), Dhenkanal, was called in to provide medical assistance.

The team administered treatment, conducted blood and trunk wash sampling, and sent the samples to the Centre for Wildlife Health (CWH), OUAT for analysis.

The calf, which initially required urgent medical support, responded positively to treatment and was placed under a specially prepared diet chart at the Athmallik Range office. On Thursday, the RRT team along with forest staff shifted the calf to the rescue centre facility at Kapilash Zoo for better treatment, quarantine care, and continuous observation.

Officials said the calf is apparently healthy and feeding well, though it will remain under quarantine until fully stabilized.
