Balasore: An infant girl was recovered from a mud dump in Ward No. 6 of Nilgiri Notified Area Committee (NAC) in Odisha’s Balasore district on Sunday morning.

According to reports, the abandoned newborn was recovered from a mosque near Malsa Temple Street hill at around 4:50 a.m. today. Local people found the baby girl lying in a mud pit.

A man named Sheikh Khairula, who was going to offer namaz at the mosque saw the newborn girl crying and called the villagers to rescue her. Chandrabindu Das, Special Assistant of the local MP, went to the spot and informed the Nilgiri police station about the incident. The infant girl was sent to the Nilgiri sub-district hospital for better treatment and then transferred to the Balasore Main Hospital where she is said to be in good health after receiving treatment.

The locals have identified the parents of the newborn child as Ramesh Naik and Damayanthi of Kalakad village of Nilgiri block. When the villagers confronted Ramesh, he apologised saying that he had committed a grave mistake by abandoning the newborn.
