Bhubaneswar: Activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the students’ front of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged a demonstration in front of the official residence of the Higher Education Minister Arun Kumar Sahoo here today.

Activists protested against the State government’s order yesterday cancelling students’ union elections in colleges and universities across the State for this year.  The student activists called the State government’s move as ‘most undemocratic’ and threatened to take to the streets.

Around 30 AVBP activists were taken into custody by the police while they tried to barge into the minister’s residence during the demonstration.

“The State government has no right to deprive us of our democratic rights. The minister too had contested students’ union elections and now he is a legislator. He has no right to snatch away our democratic right. If government doesn’t revoke its order we will take to the streets,” said Nandita Parida, an AVBP activist.

However, Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD), the ruling BJD’s students wing has said that the decision was taken keeping in mind the larger interest of the student community.

“The government has taken this decision keeping in mind the larger interest of the student community, especially to prevent student indiscipline, law and order situation and violence during student union elections. The government has felt that academic atmosphere should prevail in educational institutions,” commented Rana Pratap Patra, president of BCJD.
