Balangir: In a shocking turn of events, the prime accused in the alleged murder of a female health worker in Balangir district succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday.
Upendra Kalsai, who was accused of killing his wife Damayanti Barik, an Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM), died at Bhima Bhoi Medical College & Hospital after being admitted in a critically injured and partially burnt condition.
The incident took place under the Deogaon police station limits at the Ramchandrapur Health Sub-Centre. According to preliminary reports, Upendra allegedly assaulted his wife on Tuesday, leading to her death, and subsequently set her body on fire inside their residence.
Police personnel reached the spot on Wednesday morning and recovered Damayanti’s charred body from the house. Upendra was found lying nearby with severe injuries and burn wounds. He was immediately shifted to the hospital, where he later died during treatment.
With the death of the accused, the case has taken a more complex turn. Investigators are now probing multiple angles, including whether the crime was committed solely by Upendra or if there was involvement of any third person.
Police have initiated a detailed investigation, and further forensic examination is expected to shed more light on the sequence of events leading to the incident.
