**Bhubaneswar:** The daughter of a humble and diligent weaver in the nondescript Gopalpur village of Jajpur, Dutee Chand has made judicious use of the Rs 3 crore cash award announced for her after she clinched two silver medals in the prestigious Asian Games in Jakarta this year.
After utilising some amount of the reward money for building a house for her parents, Dutee fulfilled her life-long dream of buying a BMW car. Under the registration number ‘TS 09 J 9238’, the sprinter will now be seen cruising around in a luxurious jet blue four-wheeler.
Sharing her further plans with OMMCOM NEWS, Dutee said, “It is big deal for me as I had never been brought up in such an extravagant atmosphere. I have made a house for my parents and I feel proud that I have been able to give them something after their unflinching support throughout all these years. I will also be using the money for my sisters’ marriages. Now, I am looking forward to using the money in building a hospital in my village and an Athletic academy in the State to boost young talent.”
“More than a dream, the car is an important utility for me and the safety of my body. Sometimes, I drive the car and I also have a driver to drive me around. Young people normally drive around in these luxurious cars using their father’s money, but I feel proud that I have reached this level with my own abilities,” she added.
After clinching two silvers in the prestigious Asian Games in Jakarta this year in women’s 100m and 200m events, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had announced Rs 3 crore for the ace sprinter Dutee Chand according to the Odisha Government’s guidelines set for ‘Cash Award To Outstanding Sportspersons’. The State Government will bear all expenses for Dutee’s preparations for 2020 Tokyo Olympic.
“These cash rewards help boost upcoming athletic talent in the State. I hope the government keeps supporting athletes like this. With love and support like this, I hope to excel in the upcoming athletic championships that are set to take place from January 2019 onwards,” Dutee beamed.
