Berhampur: Surgeons at the MKCG Medical College & Hospital here after an arduous toil of nearly four hours were successful in safely removing a crowbar from the body of a 17-year-old boy that got inserted through the latter’s anus.
One Shakti Pataguru of Subarnagiri area under Kotagada police limits of Kandhamal district had climbed the damaged asbestos roof of his house to repair it, a section of the roof caved in and he fell on a crowbar which pierced through his anus deep into his body and got stuck.
“Shakti Pataguru of Subarnagiri of Kandhamal district was repairing the asbestos roof of his house. The roof which was in a damaged condition crashed to the ground with him and a crowbar (sabbal) entered his body through the anus canal,” said Dr I Gopal, Associate Professor, Department of Surgery, MKCG MC&H.
Dr Gopal told that the patient was initially taken to the Sub Divisional Hospital at Baliguda which referred him to MKCG MC&H.
“We received the patient around 3 PM. After readying his vitals we started operating on him at around 8 PM. In a rare instance, the crowbar had entered the boy’s body without affecting any vital organs only by tearing through the rectum. There was abdominal injury though,” said Dr Gopal. He said that the rod (crowbar) was very difficult to remove since it was lodged in the body after crashing through his pelvic bone and they had to remove it using the two-way approach.
“The surgery took around four hours and ended at around 12 AM. The road was finally removed. Patient at present is very healthy, his vitals are perfect, he has no problems,” said Dr Gopal.
