Bhubaneswar: The Directorate of Agriculture and Food Production, Odisha, and the Directorate of Extension Education under Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) have issued a Crop Advisory for the management of crops in view of the predicted thunderstorm activity in most places of the state till March 18.
As per the advisory, farmers have been asked to take necessary precautions to protect their crops from the adverse weather conditions. They have been asked to temporarily suspend sowing of seeds, spraying of fertilizers, and irrigation. As it is the harvesting time of crops like green gram, black gram, peanuts, etc., they have been advised to harvest the crops and store them in a safe place.
To make the most of the rainfall, farmers have been advised to store the rainwater in the paddy field and use the soil moisture later to plant crops such as pumpkin. Farmers have also been asked to take necessary measures to drain water in pulses and oilseed crops.
As there is a high possibility of occurrence of diseases in crops after prolonged rains, some tips to protect the crops are mentioned in the advisory. For any queries or support, farmers can call Ama Krushi on the toll free number 155333. They can also contact the nearest Krishi Vigyan Kendra or Agriculture Officer.
