Bhubaneswar: While all are agog for the result of recently held by-poll to the assembly seat of Patkura under the politically sensitive Kendrapara Lok Sabha seat, Odisha unit of Congress party today conceded defeat merely 24 hours before the counting of votes and declaration of the much-awaited outcome.

The counting of votes and declaration of result has been slated on Wednesday (July 24) while the polling was held peacefully by the Election Commission on July 20.

As BJD has already bagged 112 seats in the general elections and BJP has been the number two party with 23 seats in its kitty, both are confident of victory.

On the contrary, Congress has been relegated to the back burner with only 9 seats and thus under such a bleak scenario, Congress today put its hands up in Patkura too.

Responding to media queries on the eagerly-awaited Patkura result, senior Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati said, “Congress has fought the poll. Victory or defeat rests on the people’s mandate. Congress hasn’t spent a single pie on the election for which we are quite apprehensive.”

“Those people of self-esteem have certainly voted for Congress. Our poll analysis reveals that we are on the weak wicket as we haven’t spent a single pie. There may be a danger of defeat,” he remarked.

Exuding confidence, senior BJP MLA and Leader of Opposition Pradipta Kumar Naik said, “We’re quite sure that BJP will win even with a wafer thin margin of 100-200 votes. Naveen Babu might have tried a lot expecting to win with a huge margin of 20,000-30,000 votes, but it will all fail.”

On the contrary, senior MLA and BJD vice-president Debi Prasad Mishra beamed, “Patkura constituency’s BJD candidate Smt Sabitri Agrawalla will have a total victory with a huge margin of votes because we have already gauged the mood of the voters of the three blocks. The voters are from a part of Marshaghai (7 panchayats), Garadpur (18 panchayats) and Derabish (26 panchayats).”

“We were in the election campaign. BJD will win. The people have made up their mind to cast in favour of Naveen Patnaik’s leadership, Patkura’s development and as mark of homage to late Bed Babu (Bed Prakash Agarwalla),” he quipped.
