Bhubaneswar: AIIMS Bhubaneswar has marked a significant milestone in tertiary healthcare by successfully conducting its first liver transplant on December 20. This achievement reaffirms the institution’s commitment to delivering advanced and life-saving medical services to the people of Odisha and neighbouring states.
The Liver Transplant Programme, conceptualised in 2023 under the leadership of Executive Director Prof. (Dr.) Ashutosh Biswas, received its official license the same year. The Liver Transplant Outpatient Department (OPD) became operational on February 21 this year, followed by the opening of a 10-bedded, highly sophisticated transplant Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in November 2025.
The liver transplant recipient, a 37-year-old individual from Pipili, Puri District, is recovering well. The donor, the recipient’s 30-year-old brother, donated a portion of his liver voluntarily and has been discharged.
The surgery, performed by a team of over 50 members, took 14 hours to complete. The team was led by Dr. Brahmadatta Pattanaik, Head – GI & Liver Transplant Surgery, along with Dr. Tanmay Datta and Dr. Sunita Gupta, under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Vinayendra Pamecha from the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), New Delhi.
AIIMS Bhubaneswar has partnered with ILBS to ensure excellence and capacity building. The institution is witnessing a growing waiting list of liver transplant patients from Odisha and neighbouring states. The Liver Transplant OPD is held every Tuesday from 2:30 PM onwards, with over 200 patients availing services this year.
