Keonjhar: The Forest Department staff on Monday recovered the carcass of a sick elephant calf in a forest near Bhejidihi forest under Banspal block of Odisha’s Keonjhar district. The elephant has been reported to be ailing for the last few days.
According to reports, an elephant herd comprising 12 members was seen wandering in the Nayakot forest beat in the district. One calf, believed to be two years old, fell sick and got stranded in the Ankar-Bashnapal block of the forest
On being informed, Forest Department personnel along with two veterinary doctors reached the spot and started treating the calf on Sunday. On Monday morning, they were joined by Banspal Community Veterinary Hospital led by wildlife doctor Brajaraj Yadav.
However, they failed to cure the elephant calf and it died on Monday morning.
A team of Forest Department officials including Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) Ashok Kumar Das, Ranger Nayankant Sahu, Forester Jyotirmayee Patnaik, and others were present during the treatment of the elephant calf.
However, the precise reason for the calf’s death is yet to be ascertained.
