**Cuttack:** A tusker which which was injured and undergoing treatment in Narasinghpur, succumbed last night. The elephant allegedly came in the line of fire of poachers and sustained a bullet injury on Wednesday.
The alleged incidence of poaching has occurred in Guptamanik village of Narasinghpur area. Primary investigation reveals that poachers have shot at it. The wound it inflicted was infected and the tusker succumbed. The elephant was aged about 40 years.
The post-mortem report is awaited to confirm the exact reason behind its death, Athagarh Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Sasmita Lenka said, adding that enforcement will be intensified to check the activities of poachers in Athagarh forest division.
In a related incident, the body of a female elephant was found in Dhenkanal’s Kamakhyanagar block and it was suspected that the tusker had been shot dead as sharpnails were recovered from its body.
