Berhampur: An ailing elephant breathed its last in the Langeda forest under the Galeri forest area of Bhanjnagar North Ghumusar in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Wednesday morning.
The sick elephant was roaming alone in the forest adjacent to Kriyajho village for the past few days. After euthanizing the sick elephant, the Forest department made arrangements to provide food to the animal but he was unable to eat anything. A veterinary doctor from Nandankanan was called to treat the elephant after tranquilising it.
The veterinary doctor diagnosed that the elephant was ill due to an infection in its mouth about a month ago. Following prolonged treatment, the elephant’s health improved somewhat and it returned to the forest. The Forest department employees were advised to keep an eye on the animal and take care of it but despite all efforts, it breathed its last on Wednesday morning.
