“On the 9th of this month, the 11-year-old tigress Bijaya was off feed and her food intake was very less. She was undergoing treatment under the supervision of the health committee. Since she was old and had already delivered three litters her body condition was weak and was not improving as it should have. So last week also the health committee was requisitioned and there was little improvement in her condition,” informed Sanjit Kumar, Deputy Director, Nandankanan Zoological Park.
Kumar said that the ailing tigress was being administered saline as she was not taking food for the last three days.
“We had requisitioned the health committee for a detailed line of treatment. During her ultrasonography, it was detected that pus had accumulated in her uterus. She died today. While the exact cause of her death will be known after the post-mortem report is available, but prima facie her death is due to age-related illness and gynecological infection,” the Deputy Director of Nandankanan Zoo clarified.
A team of experts from the College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry affiliated to Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) visited the zoo today and examined the tigress as its health condition had deteriorated.
