Bhubaneswar: The Crime Branch will launch an investigation into the suspicious death of Jyestha Bandaki, an alleged ganja smuggler, who was reportedly beaten to death by a police team in Kandhamal district.
This incident has sparked controversy, with earlier action taken against some police officials from the Gochhapada police station due to allegations of police involvement in Jyestha’s death.
According to sources, the family and locals were dissatisfied with the police investigation and actions taken which is why the Director General of Police (DGP) ordered a Crime Branch investigation into Jyestha’s death. Crime Branch DSP Rajat Ray will lead the investigation.
Previously, five police personnel faced disciplinary action, including the Gochhapada police station’s Sub-Inspector and Havildar. Additionally, three home guards were removed from service due to negligence.
On September 26, the body of Jyestha was found near Danganamu Ghat, under Gochapada police station jurisdiction. Family members and locals alleged that Jyestha was brutally killed by police officers who later dumped his body.
According to reports, Jyestha and his friend were transporting contraband and liquor on their motorbike when Kandhamal police intercepted them. A high-speed chase ensued, resulting in the police allegedly ramming their motorbike, leaving both occupants seriously injured.
While Jyestha’s friend escaped, he was apprehended and subjected to severe beating by the officers. As a result, he died. Police then allegedly disposed of his body near the ghat.
On October 2, the Kandhamal Superintendent of Police (SP) took swift action, suspending two police officers and terminating three homeguards in connection with the incident.
