Amid Raging Debate, Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik Recognises Jayee Rajguru ‘First Odia Freedom Fighter’

**Bhubaneswar:** Amid the raging debate surrounding over the freedom fighter status accorded to Jayee Rajguru, BJD supremo and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday (December 6) recognized him as first Odia freedom fighter.

As the day marks Jayee Rajguru’s death anniversary, the Chief Minister taking to his official twitter handle tweeted: “Homage to great revolutionary & freedom fighter Saheed Jayee Rajguru on death anniversary. The fearless patriot who gave his life to the motherland lives in the hearts of all countrymen.”

Initiating his tweet in Odia, Naveen Patnaik paid homage to the ‘first Odia freedom fighter’.

On the contrary, the BJD supremo-cum-Chief Minister’s senior partyman as well as cabinet colleague Damodar Rout in his media reactions stuck to his guns and refused to accept Jayee Rajguru as a freedom fighter as five historians have already denied him the status going by their intensive findings.

Notably, Damodar Rout has recently triggered a debate saying that Jayee Rajguru was not a freedom fighter quoting famous historian B.C Roy’s historical conclusion.

On the other hand, Puri Gajapati Maharaj Dibyasingh Deb has batted for Jayee Rajguru as the first ever freedom fighter and harbinger of the great ‘Paika Bidroha’ which was later on led by legendary Buxi Jagabandhu.

Odisha is demanding that the ‘Paika Bidroha’ waged against the then British Raj should be recognized as the first ever Indian freedom movement instead of the Sepoy Mutiny and history must be rewritten accordingly.
