New Delhi/ Bhubaneswar: Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah chaired a high-level review meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday to assess the implementation of the three new criminal laws in Odisha.
The meeting was held in the presence of Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and senior officials from both the Centre and the state.
The meeting focused on evaluating Odisha’s preparedness and progress in enforcing the provisions introduced under the new legal framework concerning police operations, prison management, judicial processes, prosecution, and forensic science.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Shah emphasized the need for 100% implementation of the new criminal laws over the next six months, stating that Odisha should lead by example in rolling out these transformative reforms across all administrative levels.
He stressed that the coming decade is crucial for Odisha as it positions itself for rapid industrial and technological growth. In this context, the Union Home Minister pointed out that the updated criminal justice laws would be critical in ensuring robust law and order in the state, creating a secure environment for development.
To ensure accountability and momentum, Shah recommended a strict review mechanism. He advised that the state’s Home Secretary should conduct weekly reviews of the implementation process, while the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police should monitor progress on a fortnightly basis.
The Chief Minister, he added, should personally assess the status of implementation every month, ensuring that timelines are strictly adhered to.
Also present at the meeting were the Union Home Secretary, Odisha’s Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, the Director General of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD), the Director of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), and other senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Odisha government.
