**Bhubaneswar / Rajamahendravam:** At least 120 tourists on board of a motor boat that caught fire midway, were rescued near Veera Varapu Lanka, East Godavari at Andhra Pradesh-Odisha state border on Friday morning.
The boat was travelling from Angaluru to Papikondalu (tourist destination) with 120 passengers on board.
A short circuit in the generator of the boat is suspected to be the reason behind this mishap. As soon as the locals noticed the boat on fire, they were prompt to swim to the boat and rescue more than half of the people. They even alerted the police. The police rushed to the spot and rescued the rest. Luckily there were no casualties. Later, the burning boat was towed near river islet.
Some of the passengers suffered minor injuries and were administered first aid. A case has been registered and the investigation is on.
Meanwhile, an official statement was released by the Information and Public Relations Department of Andhra Pradesh stating that the CM has assured to provide all necessary relief measures to affected passengers.
Earlier in November 2017, a similar accident occurred in Vijayawada where 21 casualties were reported after the overloaded boat capsized. It was on the way to witness the ‘Maha Haarathi’ ritual from the Pavithra Sanghamam.
