Angul District Imposes Ban On Picnics And Social Gatherings In Forests To Curb Summer Forest Fires

Bhubaneswar: In a proactive measure to prevent devastating forest fires during the peak summer season, Angul district administration has announced a comprehensive ban on picnics, social gatherings, and related activities in all forest areas in the district.

The restrictions, effective from March 1, 2026, will remain in force until the arrival of the monsoon rains in Odisha, typically alleviating the dry and high-risk conditions.T

The ban is specifically aimed at minimizing human-induced fire risks, as dry vegetation, high temperatures, and strong winds during summer months make forests highly vulnerable.

Angul district, with its significant forest cover including parts of reserves and protected areas, has historically witnessed forest fire incidents, prompting this timely intervention by the administration.

Key provisions of the order include  complete prohibition on organizing picnics, social gatherings, camping, or any group activities in protected forests, restricted zones, and rural forest areas.

The administration also restricted carrying or using flammable materials such as matches, lighters, oils, or any other fire-starting items into these forest zones. No open fires, bonfires, or use of incendiary materials will be permitted under any circumstances.

The administration has emphasized that these measures are essential to safeguard the district’s biodiversity, prevent loss of wildlife habitat, and protect adjoining human settlements from fire spread. Forest fires not only destroy vegetation but also contribute to air pollution, soil erosion, and long-term ecological damage.

Violators will face strict legal action, including fines, penalties, and potential prosecution under relevant forest protection laws and regulations enforced by the Odisha Forest Department.
