Angul Hooch Tragedy: Odisha Excise Minister Orders Probe By District Collector

Angul: In the wake of the hooch tragedy that has claimed four lives in the district here, Odisha Excise Minister Niranjan Pujari today ordered for a probe into the matter by the District Collector and submit report at the earliest.

Notably, as many as four persons have died within two days while two others have been hospitalised after allegedly consuming illegally distilled liquor at Pathargarh under Purunakote police limits in the district.

As per an FIR lodged at Purunakote Police Station on Tuesday, a building contractor Kalia Dehury had engaged 15-20 labourers for construction of a house in Pathargarh.

In addition to payment, he used to give liquor to the labourers. It is alleged that Kalia manufactured illicitly distilled liquor in the jungle of the village.

Kalia was assisted by Basant Dehury and Sashikant Dehury in manufacturing illicit liquor. Basant and Sahishkant were also engaged in the construction work as labourers and consumed liquor after labour work.

Four persons, including one accused Sashikant, have died after allegedly consuming the liquor. Another accused Basant is undergoing treatment while the prime accused Kalia has been arrested.

The other three deceased have been identified as Kaira Pradhan (20), Tukuna Pradhan (30) and Sashibhusan Dehury (32).

Meanwhile, police stated that the post mortem of two dead bodies has been conducted, viscera has been preserved and blood samples of the victims have been collected to ascertain the cause of death.
