Khurda/Puri: The annual census of dolphins inhabiting Chilika lake started Wednesday morning at 6 am. the activity will continue till 2 pm, official sources said.
Total, 18 teams comprising senior officials of the State Forest department and wildlife experts are working together to ascertain the exact count of dolphins in the brackish water lake.
Volunteers are also involved in the annual exercise which will be carried on for three days. There are 5 to 6 members in each team which are led by authorities of the Forest Department, Chilika Development Authority and environmentalists.
“Boats will be prohibited till 2 pm today to facilitate the census work. The annual exercise is being done with the help of range finder, photography, modern technology like GPS tracking and other conventional methods,” the local DFO said.
