Annual Sulia Jatra Begins In Balangir Amid Animal Sacrifice

Balangir: The annual Sulia Jatra, well known for mass sacrifice of animals began in the Balangir district today amid fervour.

Just like every year, thousands of birds and animals will be sacrificed amid tight security arrangements at Bada Khala in Khairguda and Sana Khala in Kumuria village of Deogaon block of the district.

Despite the ban imposed on animal sacrifice after Supreme Court’s mandate and the district administration’s repeated attempts to dissuade the tribals, this time it reportedly did not clamp Section 144 of the CrPC (prohibitory orders).

Along with Dhusura Police, a platoon of police force has been deployed to keep the law and order situation under control.

Khairguda is the chief citadel of the celebration where at the altar of Sulia Budha, the presiding deity is situated. The ritual started in the morning hour. Thousands of tribals offered animals like goats, buffaloes, fowls; et al here for sacrifice and it is going to be a day-long affair.
