Bhubaneswar: Engineer Ashok Basa has been nominated as a Member of the National Building Code Committee (CED 46) of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the apex body responsible for revising India’s Building Code.

Notably, Engineer Basa is already serving as a member of the Bridge Standards and Specifications Committee (BSS) of the Indian Roads Congress (IRC), which is the highest authority in framing bridge standards in the country. With these roles, he becomes one of the very few engineers in India to hold positions in the apex committees for both critical infrastructure domains – Buildings and Bridges.

On August 25, 2025, Basa participated in the NBC revision meeting at Manak Bhavan in New Delhi, alongside Engineer V. Suresh (Chairman, CED 46), Engineer Sanjay Pant (Deputy Director General, BIS), and other officials involved in updating the National Building Code.

Engineer Ashok Basa is a distinguished professional in the field of engineering, renowned for his exceptional leadership and contributions to the global engineering community.

Engineer Ashok Basa has achieved numerous milestones in his career, showcasing his exceptional leadership and contributions to the global engineering community. Notably, he was elected as the Executive Vice President of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) for the period 2022-2025. This prestigious appointment marks a significant honor, as he is only the second Indian to hold this position since WFEO’s inception in 1968.

In addition to his role as Executive Vice President, Engineer Basa played a pivotal role as Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee (SPC), where he was instrumental in finalizing WFEO’s Strategic Plan for 2022-2025.

Engineer Basa has also made significant contributions to revising WFEO’s Code of Ethics, incorporating the impact of artificial intelligence in engineering. His efforts culminated in the approval of the revised code by the General Assembly in October 2023. Currently, he serves as a member of the Finance Committee and the Executive Board of WFEO, playing a key role in shaping the organization’s future through informed decision-making.

Beyond his WFEO roles, Engineer Basa has engaged in various notable activities. He was a speaker at the UN-STI Forum, presenting on the critical topic of “Engineering Resilience in Disaster Risk Management for Sustainable Development” in May 2022. Earlier, he was elected as a National Member of the Executive Council of WFEO for the period 2015-2019.
